About us
Prince Archbishop Paris Lodron first established a university in the city of Salzburg in 1622. For almost two centuries, up until 1810, the school was maintained by a confederation of 33 Benedictine abbeys. Since its re-establishment as a public university in 1962, the Paris Lodron University of Salzburg (PLUS), named after its original founder, has developed into a modern and vibrant university that plays an important role in Salzburg’s cultural and economic life. The university is located partly in the old city centre and partly on the modern campus on the Salzach, which makes it a dynamic meeting place for teachers, students, academics and the public. Of the almost 20,000 students currently enrolled, around 33% come from abroad, either as part of a mobility program or on their own initiative.
The PLUS currently consists of six faculties (Faculty of Digital and Analytical Sciences, Faculty of Social Sciences, Faculty of Catholic Theology, Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Faculty of Natural and Life Sciences, Faculty of Law and Faculty of Economics). In addition, interdisciplinary competences in research and teaching have joined forces in three focal areas, each of which are pioneers in their fields: the Allergy Cancer BioNano Research Centre, the Salzburg Centre of European Union Studies (SCEUS) and the Centre for Cognitive Neuroscience.
